Haute Couture is a French phrase for expensive and fashionable clothes intended for women. Couture stands for dressmaking, sewing, or needlework, whereas haute stands for elegant. Haute couture clothes are made for a specific customer from high-quality, expensive fabrics and sewed by hand often using time-consuming techniques. Therefore, couture clothes are luxurious and chic. Depending on the haute couture fashion house and the garment, the price of a couture item runs from $10, 000 for a blouse to $40, 000 and often beyond that amount. The cost includes payments for the service, work, an exclusive design and first-class materials of the finest quality. Moreover, every customer will get a garment to fit them well. It takes approximately 100-150 hours to make a handmade suit and up to 1000 hours for an embellished evening dress with thousands of beads sewn by hand. A fashion house like Chanel, for example, will have around 150 regular customers buying luxury clothes, and a couture house like Dior will make about twenty luxury wedding gowns every year Haute couture houses use only expensive luxurious fabrics, including expensive silks, fine wools, cashmeres, cottons, linens, leather, suede and furs. Alongside clothes, famous couture houses make exclusive luxurious accessories, such as hats, buttons, belts, gems, footwear, handbags. Those who can afford couture items, pay for exclusivity and the privacy offered by the system.
